Description

WHMIS 2015 Course Overview

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada’s nation-wide workplace hazard communication standard. In French it is known as the Système d'information sur les matières dangereuses utilisées au travail (SIMDUT). This WHMIS course trains participants to understand these standards when working with hazardous materials.

In February 2015, WHMIS was modified to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The GHS was developed by the United Nations to help standardize hazard communications around the world. The changes to WHMIS align the hazard classification and communication standards of WHMIS with those of the United States and other Canadian trading partners. The updated WHMIS includes:

  • New hazard classes and rules about classification
  • A new standardized format for Safety Data Sheets (previously known as Material Safety Data Sheets)
  • New label requirements
  • New WHMIS symbols/pictograms

This course is recommended for anyone who works with or around hazardous products – from janitorial staff to those in manufacturing, as well as office staff.
